A man in a constant fighting stance, Master De Snel was the founder of the Library of Scars in Jhelom, teaching a style of fighting of his own invention extensively specializing in the skill of Combat. When the Avatar arrived in Jhelom, Master De Snel greeted the Champion of Virtue, and offered to provide a demonstration of his training for 40 gold pieces per session. As they spoke, Master De Snel told the Avatar about the theft of the honor flag for the Library of Scars by Sprellic the innkeeper, and warned that if the flag was not returned, the students of the Library of Scars, Vokes, Syria, and Timmons, would have no choice but to challenge Sprellic to a duel. After the Avatar spoke with Sprellic, he managed to replace the honor flag and ended the duel.
During his travels in Minoc, the Avatar investigated the murders of Frederico and Tania, had been killed in a manner consistent with the deaths of Christopher and Inamo in Trinsic. While searching the sawmill, the Avatar found an elaborate serpentine patterned dagger nearby the bodies. While visiting the Library of Scars, Master De Snel explained that the school used their own special weaponry, which matched the dagger found. When the Avatar confronted Master De Snel, the weaponsmaster remarked that the dagger had been stolen weeks before, and strangely offered another demonstration of his training technique. When the Avatar made to leave, Master De Snel attacked him, and after a short and bloody battle, the trainer lay dead. When the Avatar searched the body, he found a Fellowship medallion. Later in his travels to Buccaneer's Den, the Avatar learned a more sinister truth about Master De Snel from Danag; Master De Snel was the Fellowship's first executioner, and after retiring, he trained each of the Fellowship's executioners including Hook, and his assistant Forskis. Forewarned, the Avatar continued his quest to save Britannia. |
A youthful man, Joseph was the mayor of Jhelom, a shrewd administrator who used his sword and pen in equal measure in the city of Valor. When the Avatar arrived in Jhelom, Joseph welcomed the Champion of Virtue warmly, and explained that the Avatar should be careful of the dueling that took place in the city, but recommended the Avatar seek out Ophelia or Daphne at the Bunk and Stool about betting on the outcomes. When asked about the whereabouts of Elizabeth and Abraham, Joseph remarked that they had visited Jhelom with the hopes of establishing a Fellowship branch, and had left to return to Britain.
As they spoke, Joseph also told the Avatar about the theft of the honor flag for the Library of Scars, founded by Master De Snel, stolen by Sprellic the innkeeper, and explained that as mayor, Joseph had to remain impartial about the duel set between Sprellic and the students of the Library of Scars: Vokes, Syria, and Timmons. After the Avatar spoke with Sprellic, he managed to replace the honor flag and ended the duel. As the Avatar continued his quest, Joseph remained in Jhelom, overseeing the city. |
A battle-scarred old soldier, Kliftin was the master of the Armoury in Jhelom, selling quality weapons and armour to meet the needs of the townspeople of the city of Valor. When the Avatar arrived in Jhelom, Kliftin greeted the Champion of Virtue, and confessed that while his business was brisk, his best customers were often killed during the daily duels in the Town Square. As they spoke, Kliftin told the Avatar about the theft of the honor flag for the Library of Scars, founded by Master De Snel, stolen by Sprellic the innkeeper, and explained that Sprellic was scheduled to fight in a duel against the three students of the Library of Scars: Vokes, Syria, and Timmons.
After he spoke with Sprellic, the Avatar told Kliftin about Sprellic's version of the story, to which the old armourer remarked that the act sounded like the work of the legendary thief and swindler Sullivan, but warned the Avatar that the other fighters would not be so easily dissuaded. Admitting that sewing had become a hobby of his, Kliftin offered to sew a duplicate of the honor flag for the Avatar to stop the duel. Presenting the false flag, the Avatar ended the duel between the students of the Library of Scars and Sprellic, saving the innkeeper's life. As the Avatar continued his quest, Kliftin remained in Jhelom, selling his wares to the people of Jhelom. |
A pretty woman with a friendly grin, Ophelia was a barmaid for the Bunk and Stool in Jhelom, employed by Sprellic, where she worked alongside Daphne. When the Avatar arrived in Jhelom, Ophelia greeted the Champion of Virtue, and offered him a room for 5 gold pieces per person a night. As they spoke, Ophelia told the Avatar about the theft of the honor flag for the Library of Scars, founded by Master De Snel, and explained that Sprellic was really the Avatar returned to Britannia after all the years, and that after Sprellic defeated the students of the Library of Scars: Vokes, Syria, and Timmons, he would open a fighting school to rival the Library of Scars.
When the Avatar asked about betting on the duel, Ophelia offered to take a wager for Sprellic's victory. After the Avatar spoke with Sprellic, he managed to replace the honor flag and ended the duel. Later during his travels, the Avatar asked Ophelia about Cosmo, a fighter he had met in Dungeon Destard, who had been promised as Ophelia's betrothed, but had to complete a certain condition before they could wed. As the Avatar continued his quest, Ophelia remained in Jhelom, busy at her tasks. |
A disgruntled, overworked woman, Daphne was a barmaid for the Bunk and Stool in Jhelom, employed by Sprellic, where she worked alongside Ophelia. When the Avatar arrived in Jhelom, Daphne greeted the Champion of Virtue sourly, and offered to serve him a meal or drink, commenting that the kitchen was her domain. As they spoke, Daphne told the Avatar about the theft of the honor flag for the Library of Scars, founded by Master De Snel, and explained that Sprellic had never fought before in his life, and that the students of the Library of Scars: Vokes, Syria, and Timmons, would kill Sprellic on the dueling field.
When the Avatar asked about betting on the duel, Daphne offered to take a wager for Sprellic's defeat. After the Avatar spoke with Sprellic, he managed to replace the honor flag and ended the duel. As the Avatar continued his quest, Daphne remained in Jhelom, working at her tasks. |
A scrawny and timid-looking man from Minoc, Sprellic was the proprietor of the Bunk and Stool in Jhelom, employing Ophelia, to charm the patrons when they became unruly, and Daphne, to wrestle the patrons when they became unruly, as barmaids. When the Avatar arrived in Jhelom, Sprellic greeted the Champion of Virtue nervously, and explained that he had accidentally stolen the honor flag for the Library of Scars, founded by Master De Snel, and that the students of the Library of Scars: Vokes, Syria, and Timmons, had each challenged him to a duel to the death. When the Avatar asked why he took the honor flag, Sprellic told his tale. A few nights before, Sprellic was at the Bunk and Stool when a stranger appeared claiming to be the Avatar.
This false Avatar, Sullivan, was a Fellowship member, and had rented both rooms in the inn, and had ordered an enormous amount of food. When the false Avatar retired to bed, he complained about the cold, and after Sprellic had brought him every blanket in the inn, still was not warm enough. In desperation, Sprellic had searched the town, but when he found all the shops closed, he borrowed an old tapestry of a wall in the Library of Scars. As he left, Sprellic found himself being chased by Syria, who was trying to kill him. Escaping, Sprellic returned to the inn to give the stranger the extra cover, who finally fell asleep. The next morning, the false Avatar was gone, his bill unpaid and all the blankets were missing, including the tapestry. Before Sprellic could react, Syria appeared in the inn and demanded the return of the honor flag, and when Sprellic admitted that he could not return it, Syria struck him and challenged him to a duel to the death. Later that day, Sprellic met Vokes, who demanded the return of the honor flag, and again was challenged to a duel to the death to be fought right after the one with Syria. Finally, Sprellic was confronted by Timmons, who demanded the flag, but when Sprellic admitted he didn't have it, he was challenged again to a duel to the death to be fought right after the one with Vokes. Sprellic confessed that he could not stand up to one of the fighters, let alone all three, and begged the Avatar to champion him in the duels. After meeting Kliftin the armourer, who sewed him a duplicate of the honor flag, the Avatar was able replace the honor flag and end the duel peacefully. As the Avatar continued his quest, Sprellic remained in Jhelom, grateful for his life. |
A fighting man originally from Jhelom, Vokes was a mercenary who earned gold with his sword arm, but had returned to his home to study at the Library of Scars, a fighting school founded by Master De Snel, in the hopes that his price would rise after he finished his training. When the Avatar arrived in Jhelom, Vokes greeted the Champion of Virtue, and told the Avatar about the theft of the honor flag for the Library of Scars by Sprellic the innkeeper, who by taking the honor flag from the wall, under a widely known and long-standing tradition, had signaled that he could beat anyone who studied at the Library of Scars in a fight, grossly insulting the method of fighting taught there as inferior.
When Sprellic refused to return the honor flag, the students of the Library of Scars: Vokes, Syria, and Timmons, were forced to challenge Sprellic to a duel over their sullied honor. After the Avatar spoke with Sprellic, he managed to replace the honor flag and ended the duel. As the Avatar continued his quest, Vokes remained in Jhelom, continuing his studies. |
A statuesque fighting woman, Syria was studying at the Library of Scars, a fighting school founded by Master De Snel, while resting from her career as a mercenary. When the Avatar arrived in Jhelom, Syria greeted the Champion of Virtue, and told the Avatar about the theft of the honor flag for the Library of Scars by Sprellic the innkeeper, while Syria had stood guard at the Library of Scars. After losing Sprellic in the shadows of the night, Syria was punished with ten lashes, which she planned to repay Sprellic for.
When Sprellic refused to return the honor flag, the students of the Library of Scars: Syria, Vokes, and Timmons, were forced to challenge Sprellic to a duel over their sullied honor. After the Avatar spoke with Sprellic, he managed to replace the honor flag and ended the duel by presenting it to Syria, who told the Avatar to warn Sprellic to keep his hands off other people's property in the future. As the Avatar continued his quest, Syria remained in Jhelom, continuing her studies. |
A very serious young man from New Magincia, Timmons had traveled to Jhelom to study at the Library of Scars, a fighting school founded by Master De Snel, but had not been able to join the school until he proved himself in combat. When the Avatar arrived in Jhelom, Timmons greeted the Champion of Virtue, and told the Avatar about the theft of the honor flag for the Library of Scars by Sprellic the innkeeper, and explained that if he could defeat Sprellic in combat, Master De Snel would have to accept Timmons as a student.
